What Is a Pole Shift?

Magnetic Pole Shift: Earth’s magnetic field has flipped many times in its history – the last full reversal was around 780,000 years ago. This would leave satellites, communications systems, and even power grids more vulnerable to geomagnetic storms.

Tipping points: Melting ice sheets could raise sea levels by meters within decades, drowning coastal cities. If the Amazon rainforest collapses, it would switch from absorbing CO₂ to releasing it, accelerating global warming. And thawing permafrost could release huge amounts of methane – a greenhouse gas dozens of times more potent than CO₂ – triggering runaway warming.
