Dehydration

Dehydration is not terribly difficult to come by when living or traveling by foot across the land. In a SHTF scenario you'll likely be on the move quickly and possibly under the

blazing sun for more of the day than you anticipated. Dehydration can come quickly and easily, especially if you are limiting your water intake. This week we discussed recognizing the signs of dehydration, and how to replete those fluids as safely as possible with limited resources. Oral rehydration salts are actually available to purchase and we do recommend looking into getting some, but if you were unable to do so, we have a quick solution that can be made at home that is great for repleting lost fluid and electrolytes if moderately dehydrated. First I will show a basic recipe that is easily prepared and quite efficient in fluid re-absorption, then below it a more complete solution.

Basic solution

1 Liter of water

1/2 tsp of salt

6 teaspoons of sugar

Complete Oral Rehydration Solution

1 liter of water that is safe to drink 1 teaspoon of salt ½ teaspoon of baking soda 4 tablespoons of sugar 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar

These two solutions can easily be prepared at home or with stored supplies and are much more efficient than water alone for rehydrating.

Disclaimer: In severe dehydration it is best to seek medical attention if possible as these solutions are not guaranteed to help or prevent complications or even death.
